The Défilé du père Noël, Montreal’s Santa Claus Parade, is the oldest event of its kind in Quebec and the unofficial start of the holiday season downtown. Hundreds of thousands of spectators have lined the route in past years. Here’s what to know for 2026.
The 2026 date is listed but not yet officially confirmed; the route and start time are based on the 2025 parade.

What to expect
Expect floats, marching bands, giant inflatables, dancers, elves and the Fée des étoiles (the Star Fairy), a beloved Quebec character who rides alongside Santa. Santa Claus himself closes the parade. Elf postal workers have collected children’s letters to Santa along the route in past years, so bring one.
Getting there
Take public transit: streets are closed to traffic along the route, and parking downtown is limited that morning. Stations near the route include Peel, McGill, Bonaventure, Square-Victoria–OACI, Place-d’Armes and Lucien-L’Allier. From the South Shore, the REM drops you at Central Station, right in the middle of the route.
Tips for the best spot
- Arrive early. Families start lining René-Lévesque Boulevard well before the start. A spot near the end of the route lets you sleep in a little.
- Dress warmly. You’ll be standing still outside for a couple of hours. Bring a blanket or something to sit on for small children.
- Pack snacks and a thermos. Hot chocolate makes the wait easier.
- Make a day of it. The Great Christmas Market in the Quartier des spectacles is open that afternoon from 11 a.m. Markets guide
