Montreal in December is properly wintry: cold, often snowy, and dark by late afternoon. That’s half the magic of a Montreal Christmas, as long as you’re dressed for it. Here’s what to expect from the weather in December and what to pack.
Average December weather in Montreal
| Typical December | |
|---|---|
| Average daytime high | Around −2 °C (28 °F) |
| Average overnight low | Around −10 °C (14 °F) |
| Cold snaps | Below −20 °C (−4 °F) with wind chill is possible |
| Snow | Frequent; a white Christmas is common but not guaranteed |
| Sunset | Around 4:15 p.m. near the winter solstice |
These are long-term averages. Some Decembers are mild and rainy, others bitterly cold, so check Environment Canada’s forecast a few days before you go.
Wind chill matters
Montreal can feel much colder than the thermometer says, especially near the river in the Old Port and on open squares. Forecasts list a “feels like” wind chill temperature; plan your outfit around that number, not the actual temperature.
What to wear
- A warm, windproof winter coat, ideally long enough to cover your hips.
- Insulated, waterproof boots with good grip. Sidewalks can be icy, and slush is common after a snowfall.
- A hat (tuque) that covers your ears, a scarf or neck warmer, and mittens, which are warmer than gloves.
- Layers underneath: a thermal base layer and a fleece or wool sweater. You’ll be going in and out of heated shops and the metro, so it helps to be able to take a layer off.
- Warm socks, wool if possible. Bring a spare pair if you’ll be out all day.
How locals deal with the cold
- Go underground. Downtown’s indoor network of tunnels connects metro stations, malls, Place des Arts and hotels, so you can get around without going outside.
- Plan short outdoor stretches. Alternate time at the markets or on the rink with a café, a museum or a mall.
- Use the fire pits. Both the Great Christmas Market and the Christmas Village have fire pits to warm up by. Markets guide
- Embrace the dark. With sunset around 4:15 p.m., the lights, markets and LUMINO installations are at their best by late afternoon. Christmas lights
Snow days
Montreal is very good at clearing snow, but a big storm can slow traffic and delay flights and trains. The metro keeps running in all weather, so it’s the most reliable way to get around.
